Seoul, Slowly

She had been lost for forty minutes and was beginning to suspect the alley was eating itself.

Aoife Brennan stood at an intersection of three narrow passages somewhere in Euljiro, Seoul, holding her phone like a compass that had given up. Google Maps showed her as a blue dot floating in a grey void — the streets here were too old and too narrow for the satellite to care about. Every direction looked the same: corrugated shutters, tangled electrical cables, signage she couldn't read in a language she couldn't speak.

She'd been in Korea for twenty-two days. Long enough to master the subway, order coffee without pointing, and cry exactly once in her apartment — a Tuesday, for no specific reason and every reason at once.

Not long enough to know that Euljiro's alleys don't follow logic. They follow history. And history here was layered sixty years deep in machine oil and metal dust.

A sound drew her left — not traffic, not voices, but a long, low rasp of wood on wood. Sandpaper, maybe. Something being made smooth. She followed it the way you follow a sound at night when you can't sleep: not because it will help, but because standing still feels worse.

The shop had no sign she could read. A rolling metal door, half open, spilling warm yellow light onto wet concrete. Inside: a man in a grey apron, running his hand along the arm of a wooden chair like he was reading something written in the grain.

She doesn't speak his language. He barely speaks hers. In six months, one of them will have to choose between the life they built and the person who made them want to build a different one. But right now, Aoife Brennan is just a girl from Cork who is completely lost — and the light from his shop is the only thing that looks like it knows where it belongs.
